The Herbarium Information Systems Committee is preparing a cooperative strategic plan for the development of the Virtual Australian Herbarium, including timeframes. Goals within reach, owing to the considerable achievements in cooperative data capture and management in Australian herbaria, will enable the prototype of this Australian Flora Information System to be developed.

Listed here are the 47 currently active herbaria in Australia (34 active) and New Zealand (13 active), organised by herbarium code, with institution name, location and collection sizes as per Index Herbariorum. The Australasian Virtual Herbarium (AVH) is an online resource that provides immediate access to the wealth of plant specimen information held by Australian herbaria. AVH is a collaborative project of the state, Commonwealth and territory herbaria, developed under the auspices of the Council of Heads of Australasian Herbaria (CHAH), representing the major Australian collections. The Australasian Virtual Herbarium Australian and New Zealand herbaria house over eight million plant, algae and fungi specimens. Herbarium specimens are an important resource for research on the Australasian flora and provide a permanent record of the occurrence of a species at a particular place and time.
